A retrospective to what some of my website pages looked like when I started my first site on GeoCities wayback in late 1996 or early 1997! GeoCities was arranged by themed areas or neighbourhoods. Mine was in the science area "CapeCanaveral/Lab". Here are a few of the banner images that I had on the home page at various stages. Very primitive and basic graphics, but that was what you saw on the internet at the time.
Geocities also offered some branded items for sale. I still have and use the coffee mug. As you can see, the logo has faded quite a bit!
I started by creating/editing the HTML in Notepad. I had purchased a book about HTML 3.2 and worked my way through it experimenting with different layouts and features. Fortunately, I kept copies of the webpages that I made. Looking through them now, I cringe at how dated they look. You can view a sample of the pages below.
As web technology progressed, I also tried using some WYSIWYG editors such as Microsoft Frontpage, Net Fusion, and Freeway (on Mac) just for something different and to automate the layouts.
In 1998, I purchased my first domain name, ramarian.com, to establish some internet real estate. I went on to add the .net, .org, and .info top-level domains to maintain ownership and for branding purposes.
In 2000 or 2001 I moved away from Geocities to a different webhost [Canadian Virtual Office (cvo.ca), who is no longer in business] due to Yahoo! taking over and destroying Geocities. I picked up ramarian.ca and made it my primary domain.
Around 2008 I changed my webhost to Netfirms. They had a whole bunch of different tools to use for maintaining a website. I eventually decided to use Wordpress to make my site. I tried a couple of different themes, but life got in the way and I would only add posts about once a year if the mood struck me. So my sites have gone stagnant.
So fast forward to March 2024 and I have now established a new domain, TWIGMIRE.CA, on a new webhost, Namespro.ca, while ramarian.ca is still on Netfirms for now. I will most likely migrate it or more likely point it to this site before my Netfirms hosting plan is up for renewal.
